Michael Gritters Appointed as Sole General Contractor Representative to California OSHPD Hospital Building Safety Board
Newport Beach, Calif. (May 27, 2015) — Michael Gritters, executive vice president in charge of healthcare for McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., has been appointed to the Hospital Building Safety Board for the State of California Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development (OSHPD). Gritters will serve a four-year term, holding the sole general contractor member seat on the board. In addition, he has been appointed to three committees that oversee administrative process and code changes, education and outreach, and standard details.
OSHPD Director Robert P. David said, “California has the highest standards for hospital seismic safety in the world, and I am pleased that Mr. Gritters has agreed to share his expertise on this very important board.”
Gritters commented, “California is one of the most rapidly evolving healthcare markets in America, and the effective delivery of healthcare continues to grow in complexity. Ensuring that our healthcare infrastructure is designed and built to safely meet these ever-changing needs is critical. I am honored to represent the contractor’s point of view in this effort.”
The Hospital Building Safety Board (HBSB) was established by Senate Bill 519 in the original Hospital Facilities Seismic Safety Act of 1973. Comprised of members who are recognized experts in health facility design, engineering and construction, the board advises the Director of the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development on the administration of the Hospital Facilities Seismic Safety Act and acts as a board of appeals with regard to seismic safety and fire/life safety issues relating to hospital facilities. Board members maintain close contact with professional groups and important industry organizations to bring attention to changes and emerging issues occurring in the design and construction of health facilities in California.
Gritters has 37 years of experience in the construction industry, playing a role in more than $4 billion in healthcare construction work over the years. His construction career has touched on nearly every aspect of the building industry. He holds a bachelor of science in construction engineering from Iowa State University and is a member of the CHOC Children’s Hospital Foundation board. He has also served as a board member of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of California Orange County District.
